Abstract

The main engine cooling system on board a ship functions to maintain optimal engine operating temperature and prevent overheating, which can damage engine components. This research was conducted aboard KM Dharma Kartika IX during a 12-month sea practice (PRALA) to identify the causes of increased freshwater temperature in the cooling system and to determine effective maintenance strategies. A qualitative method was employed through direct observation, interviews with engine officers, and analysis of maintenance documentation. The findings revealed that the primary causes of rising freshwater temperature include clogged sea chest filters due to marine debris, fouled coolers, valve operation errors (human error), and inadequate maintenance and monitoring of pump pressure and cooling temperature. In addition, incorrect valve labeling led to the closure of essential cooling water flow, resulting in engine overheating. To maintain optimal cooling system performance, several measures were implemented: the application of a Planned Maintenance System (PMS), routine monitoring of pump pressure and cooling temperature, regular cleaning of sea chest filters and freshwater coolers, and thorough documentation of all maintenance activities. Improving crew discipline and awareness also plays a key role in ensuring system reliability. With a proper maintenance system, the cooling system can operate efficiently and support the safety and performance of the ship’s main engine operations.
