The governor on board is one of the components that has a very important role in regulating engine speed and maintaining the stability of the engine rotation. Optimal governor performance can support the smooth operation of the ship, preventing overspeed or slow speed when the ship is manufering. The governor can cause problems if reguler and optimal maintenance is not carried out. At the MT. Patra Tanker 3 use engine type 4 stroke diesel main engine with 775 rpm of maximum speed. The normal rotational speed of 4 stroke main engine varies depending on the application and engine size. The purpose of this study is to discuss the performance of the governor on the main engine, the impact of the governor's performance not optimal, and the causes of the governor's performance is not optimal. In this case, the author uses a qualitative method, where data collection is carried out through direct observation, interviews, documentation to find problems that occur and how to overcome them. The results obtained from this study show that the performance of the governor on the main engine at the MT. Patra Tanker 3 is very good because the governor can maintain the stability of speed even in the condition of a ship with a fairly heavy load, there is no overspeed and slow speed. This can happen due to maintenance, adjustment, and replacement of parts that are in accordance with the serial number or part number and according to the running hours.
